Russian schools are testing students' attitudes toward Stalin and Lenin

Surveys have begun in Russian schools, in which students and young teachers are asked about their attitudes toward Soviet leaders, “traditional values,” and their level of patriotism. The questionnaires also include sections on social media and trust in information from independent sources.

According to Russian media reports, these surveys are intended to help assess the effectiveness of state ideological work in educational institutions.

According to Russian media, the surveys consist of several sections covering “traditional Russian values,” patriotism, and participation in state educational programs such as “Conversations About What Matters.” Respondents are directly asked whether they consider themselves patriots and whether they should participate in patriotic events.

A separate section concerns the role of the teacher—specifically, whether they should serve as a conduit for state values in the educational process. Thus, the questionnaires go beyond the scope of a typical sociological survey and touch on ideological attitudes. Schoolchildren are also asked about their attitudes toward figures from the Soviet era—Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, and Leonid Brezhnev. Students are asked not merely to know these names, but to assess their contributions and roles in history.

At the same time, the questionnaires assess young people’s digital behavior—their use of social media, as well as their ability to verify information. The topic of trust in so-called “foreign agents” is mentioned separately, reflecting the Russian government’s current information policy.

The Russian Ministry of Education states that such surveys are intended to help assess the level of “patriotic education” in educational institutions. In essence, this is an attempt to measure the extent to which young people share the official state ideology.

According to observers, such tools are increasingly becoming part of Russia’s educational system, where the educational process is closely intertwined with political narratives and state influence programs.
