Ghana MP was reportedly targeted for detention in court — MyJoyOnline

In Ghana’s capital, Accra, officers of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) attempted to detain the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, after a hearing at the High Court. As MyJoyOnline reports, the operation was not completed after the situation near the parliamentarian’s vehicle escalated.

Call to the president

The MP for Akim Swedru, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, called on President John Dramani Mahama to pay attention to the actions of law enforcement agencies. In a Facebook post, he questioned the decision to approach his colleague directly at the courthouse instead of sending an official invitation or using channels through the Speaker of Parliament’s office.

Osei Nyarko said that the whereabouts of a serving MP could have been easily established and that the manner in which the operation was conducted was unjustified. He also expressed concern about the actions of security agencies under Mahama’s presidency.

EOCO’s position

Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah arrived at the High Court on Wednesday, September 23, as counsel for nurse Salomey Baffoe Aviti in a case related to Ghana Jollof. After the hearing ended, a woman who identified herself as an EOCO officer asked the MP to accompany her to the agency’s office.

EOCO confirmed the attempted detention and said it had acted lawfully in seeking to secure the parliamentarian’s appearance as part of an ongoing investigation. According to the agency, the MP was invited twice to assist the investigation in February 2026, but did not appear. EOCO said it did not proceed with the operation due to potential risks to public safety and intends to review video recordings and the circumstances of the incident before making further decisions.
