The U.S., following Russia and Belarus, has withdrawn from the Council of Europe's anti-corruption group – AP
The U.S. administration has officially notified the Council of Europe of the country’s withdrawal from the Group of States against Corruption (GRECO). The U.S. Department of State confirmed this move.
The U.S. State Department explained this decision by noting that membership in the organization requires an annual financial contribution but no longer provides tangible benefits for the country’s national security. Prior to this decision, only Russia and Belarus had withdrawn from GRECO.
The Council of Europe noted the United States’ valuable contribution to preventing corruption, strengthening integrity, and upholding the rule of law, and emphasized its readiness to resume cooperation in the future. This latest decision is part of Washington’s ongoing policy of withdrawing from a number of international and multilateral organizations, including the World Health Organization and the UN Human Rights Council.
