PMI in Ghana updates PMP exam with focus on AI and strategic decisions
In Ghana, the Project Management Institute (PMI) introduced an updated Project Management Professional (PMP) certification exam in July 2026. The new version of the exam places greater emphasis on aligning projects with business goals, strategic decision-making, stakeholder engagement, leadership, sustainability, and project delivery in an environment using artificial intelligence.
As MyJoyOnline reports, the updated test is intended to assess not only knowledge of project management principles but also the ability to apply them in practical situations. Candidates are expected to be able to structure work, allocate responsibilities, coordinate stakeholders, assess a project's impact, and maintain the pace of work as conditions change.
More attention to project value
George Asamani, PMI's managing director for Sub-Saharan Africa, said that the institute regularly updates the exam so that it reflects professionals' real work, the challenges of the profession, and organizations' expectations. According to him, organizations need project managers who understand business priorities, take responsibility for results, and assess whether a project creates value.

PMI cites its own research, according to which 35% of chief executive officers named the gap between planning and execution as the main obstacle to transformation. Another 34% of respondents pointed to the inability to continuously update employees' skills in line with future needs.
Demand for specialists is growing
According to PMI's estimate, organizations worldwide may need up to 30 million additional project management professionals by 2035. The institute links this demand to complex transformation programs, as well as infrastructure, technological, and organizational changes in business and the public sector.
PMI also reported that during the first five months of 2026, the number of PMP certificates issued increased by 36% year on year. The update does not affect the validity of certifications held by current PMP holders, provided they maintain active certification status.
