CHPS health facility with maternity ward built in Dadetoklo, Ghana — MyJoyOnline

A CHPS health facility with consultation rooms, a maternity ward and nurses’ accommodation has been built in the fishing village of Dadetoklo in the Sene East District of Ghana’s Bono East Region. According to MyJoyOnline, it is intended to serve Dadetoklo and neighboring settlements.

The road to medical care

Previously, the nearest CHPS facility for Dadetoklo residents was in Kojokrom. The road to it was dusty, potholed and became almost impassable during the rainy season.

Residents said that women in labor were transported by motorcycles or bicycles, and some women gave birth while still on the way to the medical facility. One resident told journalists that the community had lost women on this road, particularly when labor began at night.

Health workers in the area confirmed that the lack of a nearby medical facility contributed to preventable maternal deaths, delays in immunization and cases of untreated illnesses.

Need for road repairs

Bono East Regional Minister Francis Owusu Antwi inspected the new facility and praised the Sene East District Assembly for prioritizing the needs of rural communities. He urged health authorities to provide the facility with staff and necessary supplies, and residents to take care of it.

At the same time, residents stress that the road between Dadetoklo, Kojokrom and other settlements still needs repair. They say it is important for emergency medical care, trade and daily travel.
