Ghana to raise public transport fares by 8% from September 26 — MyJoyOnline
In Ghana, public transport fares will increase by 8% from September 26, 2026. The country’s government and transport associations reached the relevant agreement following consultations on revising fare prices, MyJoyOnline reports.
Agreement after consultations
Negotiations between Ghana’s Ministry of Transport and carriers lasted several weeks. Proposals to raise fares had previously been submitted by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC). They cited rising operating costs.
During the first meeting with the ministry on September 8, the transport associations proposed revising fares. The government, for its part, presented measures, including a diesel fuel intervention of 2 Ghanaian cedis per litre, intended to support carriers and passengers. A joint group involving the ministry, GPRTU and GRTCC was created to analyse cost components.

Which transport will be covered by the revision
Before the final decision was adopted, transport associations urged drivers and carriers not to set fares above those approved. As of September 16, the GPRTU and the Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA) stated that no official decision to increase fares had yet been made.
The updated fares will apply to shared taxis, trotro transport and other commercial forms of public transport in accordance with the agreed fare structure. The fare revision comes amid carriers’ concerns over the costs of vehicle maintenance, spare parts and other operational needs.
