In Ghana, authorities urged not to close discussions on constitutional review
In Ghana, former Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service Dr. Kwabena Bempa Tando called on the authorities to keep discussions on the constitutional review open. In his view, the process can gain broad public support only if citizens and stakeholders have sufficient opportunities for meaningful participation.
Call for broad consultations
Tando, who is also a representative of the New Patriotic Party's education committee, expressed his position on the Newsfile program on JoyNews on September 12, 2026. As MyJoyOnline reports, he stressed the need for additional broad consultations if the authorities want a larger share of the population to feel involved in the process.
According to Tando, the constitutional review is an important nationwide process in which participation should not be limited to political actors and state institutions. He believes that citizens will be more willing to join it and support changes if they are convinced that their comments have been heard.

Discussion of state institutions
Tando's comments came amid a broader discussion of governance and political influence in Ghana's state institutions. The government rejected a reported figure of 54% regarding the politicization of state-owned enterprises, while the International Monetary Fund had expressed concern about political influence over the management of such entities.
Tando said that an open consultation process would allow stakeholders to examine the proposed constitutional changes, raise issues and propose alternative ideas before the reforms are finalized.
