Demolition of structures begins at Laboma Beach in Ghana
Demolition of structures at Laboma Beach, located in the protected buffer zone of the Kpeshi Lagoon, has begun in Ghana’s La Dade-Kotopon Municipality. The work started after a 21-day ultimatum issued on August 7 by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council to residents and business representatives in the area, MyJoyOnline reports.
Which facilities are being demolished
The demolition has affected several structures in the Laboma area, including the Pink Flamingo lounge. Authorities said the establishment is located within the protected zone of the Kpeshi Lagoon.
The directive to vacate the area was part of measures to reclaim waterways and demolish development that authorities consider a cause of flooding in some parts of Greater Accra. Officials cited significant silting of the lagoon and the spread of unauthorized construction in its buffer zone among the main problems.

Authorities’ position
During a previous inspection, Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Oklow stated that the government would demolish structures whose occupants failed to comply with the order to vacate the area. According to her, some developers had previously been ordered to halt construction, but continued work despite warnings.
The demolition at Laboma Beach is part of a broader campaign by the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council and other state institutions to clear waterways, remove unauthorized structures, and strengthen the region’s protection against flooding. Authorities expect the work to continue in order to restore the protected buffer zone of the Kpeshi Lagoon.
