13 parents jailed in Hong Kong over kindergarten bribery scandal
A Hong Kong court sentenced 13 parents and an intermediary to prison terms ranging from eight to fourteen months for bribery amounting to HKD 1.1 million (approximately USD 140,000) to secure their children's admission to a prestigious kindergarten.
The investigation revealed that between the 2019 and 2022 academic years, the accused paid bribes ranging from HKD 20,000 to HKD 200,000 to bypass queues and obtain priority admission to Wu Kai Sha International Kindergarten, operated by the English Schools Foundation (ESF).
A former kindergarten employee who processed applications previously pleaded guilty to accepting bribes and testified against the parents. Her sentencing is scheduled for late April.
The ESF is Hong Kong's largest non-profit international educational organisation. Tuition fees at Wu Kai Sha Kindergarten amount to approximately HKD 111,000 per year.
This case highlights ongoing corruption challenges within the education sector, even among reputable international institutions, stressing the need for transparency during admissions processes. Increased regulatory oversight of such institutions may follow in response.
