A shipment of 50 handguns from Turkish citizens was seized in Greece
Greek law enforcement officials detained two Turkish citizens after discovering 50 handguns in a truck during a border check. An investigation into the illegal transport of weapons is ongoing.
Police reported that the arrest took place on Wednesday evening shortly after two trucks heading toward the Greek border arrived at a checkpoint in the Evros region. It is believed that the first driver was acting as a “scout” for the second, assessing the situation.
During a search of the second truck, “carefully hidden” bags containing 50 different pistols and 49 magazines were found under the seat in the cab and behind the driver’s seat.
A preliminary investigation established that a 61-year-old Turkish man, one of the detainees, had received the weapons in Istanbul from a certain Ahmet and, at his request, was transporting the cargo to an unidentified person in Greece, in the Komotini area, for a fee of 5,000 euros. This Turkish citizen allegedly already had a criminal record in Greece for smuggling illegal migrants.
Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the detainees for participation in a criminal organization and violations of firearms laws, according to Kathimerini.
