Estonian Parliament elects Justice Chancellor Ülle Madise president
The Estonian Parliament has elected Justice Chancellor Ülle Madise as the country’s next president. Her candidacy received 71 votes in a secret ballot, while at least 68 votes were required to win, Anadolu Agency reports, citing Estonian public broadcaster ERR.
Voting results
Seventy-eight deputies out of the 101 members of the Riigikogu, Estonia’s parliament, took part in the vote. Seven ballots were left blank, and there were no invalid ballots.
After the results were announced, Madise said she would make every effort to be worthy of this trust. She also expressed hope that mutual understanding, active discussions and mutual support would make life in Estonia happy, good and safe.

Inauguration and experience
Madise will become Estonia’s seventh president and the second woman to hold the office. She will be sworn in on October 12. She will succeed Alar Karis, who said in June that he would not seek a second term. After the vote, Karis congratulated the president-elect and wished her strength, wisdom and determination.
Ülle Madise was born on December 11, 1974, in Tartu. She is a lawyer and legal scholar and has served as Justice Chancellor since 2015. Madise studied law at the University of Tartu and received a doctoral degree in administrative management from Tallinn University of Technology in 2007.
Previously, she worked at Estonia’s Ministry of Justice, advised the Riigikogu’s Constitutional Committee, served as chief auditor at the National Audit Office and was legal adviser to President Toomas Hendrik Ilves from 2009 to 2015. As Justice Chancellor, Madise focused on protecting personal freedoms and legal oversight while maintaining a nonpartisan role.
