Macron in Britain: France 24 discusses European defence
French President Emmanuel Macron attended a presentation event in London for the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition, which was transported across the English Channel for the first time. King Charles III and Queen Camilla also took part in the event. The tapestry, which tells the story of the 11th-century Norman conquest of England, is an embroidered cloth rather than a tapestry in the strict sense.
European defence
In a France 24 programme, Macron's visit was examined in the context of the discussion on strengthening European defence. The programme's authors described Europe as being caught between a hostile Russia — an aggressor state — and the United States, which is moving away from the region.
The hosts also questioned how quickly Macron and the United Kingdom's new Prime Minister Andy Burnham could lead an alternative to NATO, which the programme's authors described as weakening. According to them, Macron and Burnham already lead the coalition of the willing on Ukraine.

The programme also discussed the growing influence of far-right populists who, in France 24's wording, have friends in Moscow and Washington. The authors named one of them as the favourite to succeed Macron in eight months.
