In Greece, cars were set on fire near the homes of members of the ruling party
In Thessaloniki, unknown individuals carried out a series of nighttime attacks using incendiary devices near residential buildings where members of the ruling New Democracy party live. Five people were injured as a result of the fires set to cars and motorcycles; some of them were hospitalized with burns and smoke inhalation.
The night turned into chaos in the Greek city of Thessaloniki after unknown assailants carried out several arson attacks near apartment buildings where members of the ruling conservative New Democracy party live. The attacks took place early in the morning and were accompanied by explosions of homemade incendiary devices, which set cars and motorcycles ablaze, and the smoke quickly spread through residential neighborhoods.
According to police, the devices were made from camping gas cylinders, and the incidents themselves occurred between 4:00 and 4:45 a.m. It was during the last attack that the fire damaged vehicles, resulting in injuries to five people who had to be hospitalized. Separately, it is reported that one of the set-on-fire cars belonged to a parliamentary candidate from the “New Democracy” party. She suffered burns, and her mother is in the intensive care unit. Three other residents of the building were hospitalized with smoke inhalation, as the fire spread rapidly through the stairwells and entryways.
Law enforcement officials emphasize that this is not the first time such attacks on political symbols and government officials have occurred in Greece. In most cases, they result only in property damage, but this time the consequences were much more serious, as people who were simply at home during the nighttime attack were injured. This was reported by the AP.
In northern Greece, a forest fire claimed the lives of two people. A 66-year-old man died, and later, a body was found in the house that, according to preliminary reports, is believed to be that of his 12-year-old son. The victim’s wife suffered burns, but her life is not in danger.
