Kisumu Deputy Governor Owili to run in Kenya’s 2027 elections
Matthew Owili, the deputy governor of Kenya’s Kisumu County, has announced his intention to run for governor in the 2027 general election. He announced the launch of his campaign on September 3 during an event at Ciala Resort in Kisumu, Nation Kenya reports.
Campaign priorities
Owili served as deputy governor under Anyang' Nyong'o throughout both of his terms. He said he intends to continue the course of the current administration and complete projects launched by the county authorities and the national government.
The candidate presented a ten-point programme. Among his priorities, he named quality healthcare, roads and infrastructure, access to clean and reliable water, jobs and economic opportunities for young people, education, and support for farmers, fishers, women and small businesses.
Owili also promised transparent governance, prudent use of public funds and development for all wards, villages and communities in the county without discrimination.

Projects and rivals
If elected, Owili said he would prioritize unfinished projects, completing them before starting new ones. He also promised to address the issue of unpaid bills.
Among the projects the candidate wants to accelerate is the 30-kilometre Lakeside Promenade. According to him, it is intended to transform the city waterfront into a place for tourism, recreation, business and investment. Owili also announced plans to establish special economic zones to attract manufacturing, industrial investment and innovation, as well as to complete urban renewal programmes, including the Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Project KISIP I and KISIP II.
Current Governor Anyang' Nyong'o is serving his final term in office. The publication names Kisumu County Woman Representative Ruth Odinga, MPs Joshua Oron, Rosa Buyu and Aduma Owuor, Senator Tom Ojienda, former MP Ken Obura and auditor Rogers Okeyo among other contenders for the post. Owili called on politicians to conduct a peaceful campaign and compete through programmes rather than violence.
