Greece Will Expand Navagio Beach to Save the Iconic Shipwreck

Greek authorities have announced a large-scale plan to protect one of the country’s most famous beaches, located on the island of Zakynthos, in order to preserve the famous ship “Panagiotis.”

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced plans to expand the beach by approximately 30 meters toward the sea. The project involves using about 45,000 cubic meters of gravel, which will move the ship’s hull further away from the waves and slow its deterioration due to erosion.

The “MV Panagiotis” ran aground off the coast of Zakynthos back in October 1980, after which it became the island’s main tourist attraction, and Navagio Beach itself—one of the most recognizable places in Greece. Currently, due to the risk of landslides, access to the beach has been closed at least until the end of October, though the exact date for the start of coastal reinforcement work remains unknown.

The Zakynthos municipality stated that restoring the shoreline and preserving the ship will mark a new phase for the island’s landmark. Previously, decisions regarding the site were made by the country’s central government, but from now on, the municipality will be responsible for further development in collaboration with the National Technical University of Athens. The island’s mayor, Georgios Stasinopoulos, emphasized that the ship is a world-famous symbol of Zakynthos and must be preserved for future generations.
