In Japan, the number of people over 100 has exceeded 100,000 — CNN
Japan has set a new record for the number of centenarians—as of September 2026, there are 107,677 people over the age of 100 living in the country. That’s approximately 8,000 more than a year earlier.
The number of centenarians in Japan has been growing for 56 consecutive years. Women make up the vast majority of those who have reached their 100th birthday—accounting for 88 percent of the total.
“I am very pleased that so many people remain active and healthy for such a long time,” said Health Minister Ken’ichiro Ueno.
Japan remains among the world leaders in life expectancy. In 2024, the country’s average life expectancy was about 84 years. Scientists attribute this longevity, in particular, to dietary habits and an accessible healthcare system. At the same time, some Japanese people adhere to the principles of “ikigai”—the search for meaning and fulfillment in life.
According to Japanese authorities, among the country’s oldest residents are 114-year-old Fuyo Kishimoto from Kyoto and 112-year-old Hikaru Kato from Kumamoto.
At the same time, record-breaking longevity poses serious demographic and economic challenges for Japan. The country’s population, which stands at about 123 million, continues to decline due to a record-low birth rate. This increases the burden on the elder care system and reduces the size of the working-age population.
