A fire in Japan destroyed a shrine housing a 1,200-year-old eternal flame
On the Japanese island of Miyajima, a fire destroyed the Reikado Shrine, home to an "eternal flame" that had burned continuously for over 1,200 years.
This was reported by Japanese media.
The fire broke out on the morning of May 21. The flames destroyed the shrine’s pavilion and an adjacent building, and spread to a nearby forest.
Rescue workers managed to contain the blaze. According to preliminary reports, there were no casualties.
According to legend, the fire at the shrine has been burning since 806, when it was lit by the Buddhist monk Kukai, the founder of this religious site.
It was from this flame that the memorial fire in Hiroshima was lit in memory of the victims of the atomic bombing.
This is not the first such incident—a fire had already occurred at this same location in 2025.
