A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck Amami Island in Japan

An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck the southwestern Japanese island of Amami in Kagoshima Prefecture on May 20. According to seismological services, the tremors occurred on Wednesday. Information regarding possible damage or casualties is currently being verified.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake occurred at 11:46 a.m. local time, with the epicenter located off the coast of the main island of Okinawa Prefecture at a depth of about 50 kilometers. No tsunami warning was issued.

On Yoron Island in the southern part of Kagoshima Prefecture, the earthquake reached a magnitude of 5 on the Japanese seven-point seismic activity scale.

With tremors of this magnitude, it may be difficult for people to move around without holding onto something stable. Books, dishes, and unsecured furniture may also fall. So far, no casualties or significant property damage have been reported on Yoron as a result of the earthquake.

The meteorological agency warned that tremors of similar intensity are possible over the next week, especially in the next two to three days.
