Three people die in Japan after suspected arson at pastry shop in Gifu
In the city of Motosu in Japan’s Gifu Prefecture, three people died after a fire at the Sunrise pastry shop. The bodies of two people were found at the scene, while three others were taken to hospital, where the death of one person was later confirmed. According to The Japan Times, local authorities suspect arson.
Report of injuries and gasoline
The fire at the pastry shop began at around 9 p.m. on Saturday. A person who was at the scene told police that someone had been stabbed, after which gasoline was sprayed and a fire broke out.
The fire was extinguished about three hours later. The fire-damaged section of the two-story steel-frame building covered an area of about 300 square meters. The building combined commercial and residential premises.

Police investigation
At the time of the incident, 11 people were in the establishment, including a woman in her 60s and her acquaintances. Gifu Prefectural Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident and believe that one of the people present at the pastry shop may have been involved.
The pastry shop had an area for visitors and, according to information on its website, was marking its 20th anniversary. The establishment is located in a residential area about one kilometer southwest of Kitagata-Makuwa Station on the Tarumi Railway.
