In Israel, voters will elect a new composition of parliament — the Knesset — on October 27. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the country’s longest-serving head of government, hopes to secure another term.

Opposition leads the coalition

As Al Jazeera English reports, the latest opinion polls indicate that the opposition bloc is ahead of the prime minister’s coalition. An episode of the Inside Story program discussed whether Netanyahu has a chance of retaining power after the vote.

The episode was hosted by Cyril Vanier. The discussion featured Mitchell Barak, founder of KEEVOON Research, Strategy & Communications; Ori Goldberg, a political commentator specializing in Israel; and Efraim Inbar, founder and senior researcher at the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security.

Three years of confrontation

According to Al Jazeera English, Netanyahu has spent most of the past three years fighting Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Iran. Netanyahu said he sought to end what he calls an existential threat from Israel’s enemies. The October 27 vote will be a test of support for his leadership.
