More than 100 students study in the Jewish program at a Baku school — Jerusalem Post

More than 100 students are currently enrolled in the Jewish program at School No. 46 in Baku, Azerbaijan. The program combines Azerbaijan’s national curriculum with instruction in Hebrew, Jewish history and traditions, The Jerusalem Post reports.

Growing number of students

Community representatives reported steady growth in the number of students in recent years. According to them, the increase could lead to a need for additional classroom space.

The Jewish program has been led since 2008 by Rabbi Zamir Isayev, head of the Sephardic Jewish community of Baku. He recently celebrated his 45th birthday. Community members gathered for the occasion in a sukkah in Baku; representatives of the Azerbaijani authorities also attended the event.

Congratulatory letter from the committee chairman

During the event, Isayev received a congratulatory letter from Ramin Mammadov, chairman of Azerbaijan’s State Committee for Religious Associations. Mammadov noted the role of the Sephardic community in the country’s social and cultural life, as well as its contribution to the tradition of coexistence.

The letter referred to tolerance, multiculturalism and interreligious dialogue as priorities of state policy under President Ilham Aliyev. Isayev stressed that education remains a key focus of his work. He also participated in events held by Jewish organizations in Washington and Jerusalem dedicated to strengthening ties between Azerbaijan, Israel and the United States.
