US assures Pakistan its position on Kashmir is unchanged — Dawn
The United States has assured Pakistan that its position on Kashmir has not changed: Washington continues to consider the region disputed territory, the settlement of whose status requires an agreement between Pakistan and India. Dawn reports this, citing diplomatic sources.
Reaction to the ambassador’s statement
Pakistan sought clarification from the US side after remarks by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor. During a visit to Srinagar on August 19, he called Jammu and Kashmir “an important part of India.”
According to Pakistani diplomatic sources, US officials told representatives of Islamabad that there had been “no change” in the US position. They also confirmed that Washington views Kashmir as an issue to be resolved by Pakistan and India.

Gor also said that the United States is reviewing its recommendation against travel to the region, citing an improvement in the security situation. Following his comments, Pakistan lodged a protest and summoned the US chargé d’affaires in Islamabad. The Pakistani side said that the ambassador’s words did not correspond to its understanding of the United States’ established position and UN Security Council resolutions.
Pakistan’s position
The issue was also discussed in Washington during a media engagement involving Rana Muhammad Qasim Noon, chairman of Pakistan’s parliamentary committee on Kashmir, and Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh. Noon stated that Pakistan provides political, diplomatic and moral support to Kashmiris and stressed that lasting peace in South Asia is impossible without resolving the dispute in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.
Sheikh, for his part, said that the Kashmir issue remains part of the international and UN agenda, and that its peaceful resolution is necessary for regional and international stability.
