Water supply disruptions possible in Karachi due to power outage
In Karachi, Pakistan, residents of certain areas may face disruptions to water supply following a power outage at the Dhabeji pumping station. This was reported by the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC).
As Dawn reports, at 6:00 a.m., power supply to several phases of the station was interrupted due to a cable fault in the K-Electric power company’s system. The Dhabeji station is the city’s main water intake point, so even short power outages immediately affect its operations.
10 pumps are not operating
According to KWSC, the outage affected the third and fourth phases of the station, as well as the K-3 pumping house. As a result, 10 of the 21 pumps are not operating. The corporation warned that the equipment shutdown could partially affect water supply to the city.

KWSC representatives are in contact with K-Electric regarding the restoration of power supply. The corporation said it would be able to immediately start 10 pumps once electricity supply is restored and urged residents to avoid unnecessary use of water.
Previous disruptions
On July 27, a disruption at the Dhabeji station had already caused a shortage of 48 million gallons of water in Karachi. At that time, the disruptions affected, among others, parts of the North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Gulberg Town, New Karachi, Landhi, Korangi and Scheme 33 areas.
Earlier that month, another power outage at Dhabeji affected the K-2 pumping house, where malfunctions occurred in the collector chamber and main valves. As a result, three large pumps were temporarily shut down. On May 30, an emergency shutdown at the Dhabeji station also led to the suspension of 10 out of 21 pumping units.
