Free trial run of Ningbo railway in China draws crowds — ECNS

A six-day free trial run of Suburban Railway Line 12, which crosses a sea strait, began in Ningbo in eastern China on September 14. Large crowds gathered at stations on the first day, prompting the operator to introduce passenger flow control measures, ECNS reports.

Route to Xiangshan County

The 61.5-kilometer line has 10 stations and connects six districts and one county. Trains reach speeds of up to 160 km/h, and the trip from central Ningbo to Xiangshan County takes about 30 minutes.

The route includes an 8.3-kilometer sea bridge. The trial run is being conducted to gather public feedback before the line's official opening.

Passenger flow control

Crowds gathered, in particular, at Xiaoyangjiang and Xiangshan Dancheng stations. Xiaoyangjiang Station is an interchange hub for three lines of the Ningbo Rail Transit network; crowd control measures were used there on the first day of trial rides.

The number of visitors to seafood markets in Xiangshan increased by 50–60% compared with regular days. Attendance at the Songlanshan coastal resort also increased. Passengers can receive vouchers for two free rides at any station.
