In Ghana, judge warns tricycle drivers of imprisonment for traffic violations — MyJoyOnline
In Nkawie, Ghana, Circuit Court Judge Robert Addo warned Pragya tricycle drivers that they could face imprisonment for violating traffic rules. The warning came after the court fined three drivers a total of 1,500 Ghanaian cedis, MyJoyOnline reports.
Fines and possible imprisonment
Arafat Ali was fined 300 Ghanaian cedis for operating a tricycle without registration plates. If he fails to pay the fine, he must spend 30 days in prison.
Samuel Awuni and Issahaku Fumpoli were each fined 600 Ghanaian cedis for operating without driving licences and insurance. If they fail to pay the fines, they were sentenced to a total of 13 months in prison.

The judge said that some drivers expect only to pay a fine in court and return home after being held accountable for traffic violations. According to him, the law also provides for imprisonment, so drivers must comply with the rules governing their work.
Inspection during patrol
Prosecutor Police Inspector Kwaku Frimpong told the court that on September 14, 2026, officers from the Nkawie Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department were patrolling the community. Between 08:30 and 09:00, they stopped three Pragya tricycle drivers and found violations during an inspection.
The men were then detained, processed, charged and brought before the court.
