In China, a family’s benefits are being reviewed after daughter’s trip to a concert in Hong Kong — ECNS

In the city of Ganzhou in China’s Jiangxi province, a low-income family’s eligibility for social assistance is being reviewed after their daughter traveled independently to Hong Kong for a concert. The trip sparked an online discussion and raised concerns within the family that the payments could be canceled.

Review of eligibility for payments

As ECNS reports, local authorities said that the trip by the girl, whose surname is Huang, triggered an alert in the dynamic monitoring system for assistance recipients. Community workers reminded the family of the relevant rules, after which the family sought advice online.

Officials said they are reviewing the family’s circumstances and will consider the case in accordance with the rules. The report does not mention a decision already having been made on terminating or maintaining the payments.

Family income and travel expenses

The rural social assistance standard in Jiangxi is 785 yuan, or about $117, per person per month. According to the outlet, this family receives about 2,000 yuan per month.

The family’s daughter saved between 3,000 and 5,000 yuan through part-time jobs and scholarships to cover the concert expenses. In a commentary published on September 9, People’s Daily emphasized that eligibility for such assistance is assessed at the level of the entire household, taking into account the family’s total income and expenses.
