China to reduce fuel surcharge on air tickets starting in 2026

From January 5, 2026, China will lower the fuel surcharge rate on domestic flights. The maximum one-way fee will be 20 yuan (about $2.8), which is expected to reduce the cost of air tickets across the country.

Passengers will pay 10 yuan for flights up to 800 km, and 20 yuan for routes over 800 km, representing decreases of 10 and 20 yuan respectively from previous rates. Airlines will have the discretion to set the surcharge within the approved range to help smooth out fluctuations in aviation fuel prices.

The fuel surcharge on domestic flights was first introduced in 2000. In 2015, government regulation of this fee was lifted, allowing airlines to incorporate it into the base ticket price. This reduction is anticipated to make air travel more affordable for passengers in China.
