In the U.S. House of Representatives, a group of Democratic lawmakers has introduced a resolution calling for the initiation of impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump. The document contains 13 articles of impeachment alleging potential violations of the Constitution and abuses of power.
This was reported on the official website of the U.S. Congress.
The resolution was initiated by Congressman John Larson, who was joined by Steve Cohen and Bonnie Watson Coleman. Lawyers and human rights advocates also participated in drafting the resolution.
The authors of the document assert that the president “is subject to impeachment for high crimes and misdemeanors,” which allegedly violate his oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution.
Among the main charges are the use of force in foreign operations, the militarization of law enforcement agencies, unconstitutional detentions and deportations of migrants, political pressure on opponents, and interference in Congress’s budgetary powers.
The document also specifically mentions allegations of abuse of the power of pardon, the imposition of emergency measures without sufficient grounds, and the use of the law enforcement system to persecute political opponents.
It also addresses foreign policy concerns, including actions in the Caribbean region and regarding Venezuela, which the resolution’s authors consider questionable from the perspective of international law.
At the same time, this is only the initial stage of the procedure: even if the House of Representatives supports it, the final decision on impeachment is made by the U.S. Senate.
