Man sentenced to five years in prison in Latvia for transporting migrants
In Latvia, a man was sentenced to five years in prison for illegally transporting five migrants who crossed the country’s external border. The Criminal Chamber of the Senate of the Supreme Court of Latvia refused to initiate cassation proceedings in the case, LSM English reports.
Case circumstances
The Latgale District Court found that the defendant arrived at a designated location in Ludza Municipality and took five migrants into his car. Before that, other members of an organized group had transported these people across the Latvian border.
During the trip, the man dropped off four passengers, but he was detained in Rēzekne Municipality together with the fifth migrant. The offense was committed during the period of an enhanced border security regime.

Court decisions
The court of first instance found the man guilty of illegally transporting migrants in a case involving an offense committed as part of an organized group and sentenced him to five years in prison.
The Latgale Regional Court, having considered the convicted man’s appeal, upheld the verdict. The court concluded that guilt had been proven beyond a reasonable doubt and that the imposed punishment was neither excessively harsh nor disproportionate.
