In Latvia, a new electric train was named after a white mushroom
The Latvian passenger rail operator Vivi will give four electric trains new names in August. One of them will be called “Baravika”—the Latvian name for the porcini mushroom (Boletus edulis), according to LSM English.
The trains are being given new names as part of Vivi’s collaboration with the state forestry company Latvijas valsts meži. Three other electric trains will be named “Briedis” (“male elk”), “Apse” (“aspen”), and “Osis” (“ash tree”).

The porcini mushroom is one of the most popular and valuable forest mushrooms in Latvia. It is particularly common in late summer and fall and grows in both coniferous and deciduous forests. Mushroom picking during this period has become a family tradition for many residents of the country.
The Vivi network already has a train named “Gailene”—which means “chanterelle” in Latvian. Latvijas valsts meži noted that porcini mushrooms, like chanterelles, are often found in pine, spruce, and mixed forests, particularly in open areas with moss.
