Riga plans to build 732 affordable rental apartments by 2030

Riga plans to build 732 affordable rental apartments by 2030. The housing is set to be built in the districts of Plavnieki, Ziepniekkalns, and Bolderāja, according to LSM English, citing the state-owned company Valsts nekustamie īpašumi (VNĪ).

The construction is being carried out as part of the public-private partnership program “Rental Housing for Latvian Professionals.” Participants in the project include VNĪ, the Ministry of Finance, local governments, and the private sector.

According to VNĪ, affordable rental housing is intended to provide quality living conditions for young families and help attract professionals to sectors that are important to the state and municipalities. The government launched the program due to a shortage of new, modern, and high-quality apartments.

In the first phase of the program, a total of 1,290 rental apartments are planned to be built in six municipalities across Latvia. In Riga, they will be constructed on Tinužu, Mežrozišu, and Ozolciema streets. Apartments are also planned in Tukums (150), Jēkabpils (140), Cēsis (100), Gulbene (48), and Daugavpils (120).

Viesturs Kleinbergs, chairman of the Riga City Council, stated that the city has yet to determine which professions will be eligible for this housing. Among the possible categories, he mentioned education and social service workers, municipal police officers, medical professionals, and young researchers. According to him, the lack of affordable housing is one of the factors making it difficult for young people to start their careers in Riga, especially for professionals with low incomes or without savings to purchase their own homes.
