Latvia to hold diaspora forum and advisory council meeting — LSM English

Latvia will host the Latvian Diaspora Forum 2026 and a meeting of the Diaspora Affairs Advisory Council at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday, September 18, 2026. This was reported by LSM English.

Security and state support

The forum’s first discussion will focus on the actions of diaspora representatives and Latvian citizens abroad in crisis situations, as well as the possible contribution of diaspora communities to supporting the country. During the second discussion, participants will assess the security of the diaspora information space, information dissemination mechanisms, and opportunities for cooperation between diaspora organizations, media outlets, and Latvian state institutions.

The forum will be opened by Foreign Minister Baiba Braže. Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dace Melbārde, Ambassador-at-Large for Diaspora Affairs Zanda Grauze, other officials, and experts will also take part in the discussions. The forum and discussions will be streamed on the Latviesi.com Facebook page.

Award and plans for 2027–2029

As part of the forum, Baiba Braže will present the “Person of the Year in the Latvian Diaspora 2026” award. The distinction is intended for diaspora representatives who have made a significant contribution to promoting Latvia, civic participation, culture, education, the economy, international relations, or other areas important to the country.

At the third meeting of the Diaspora Affairs Advisory Council in 2026, participants will consider the diaspora work plan for 2027–2029, preparations for the elections to the 15th Saeima, and a 72-hour guide on actions in a crisis situation for people living outside Latvia. The meeting’s broadcast will begin at 14:00 on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ “Diaspora LV” Facebook page.
