A man was arrested in Latvia for desecrating the Ukrainian flag
In the Latvian city of Daugavpils, law enforcement officers detained a 23-year-old man who committed an act of vandalism against a Ukrainian national symbol. He could face a prison sentence.
This was reported by the publication Delfi.
The incident occurred back in March near one of the local businesses. According to the investigation, the perpetrator tore down the Ukrainian flag, which was displayed next to the Latvian flag, and damaged it.
The damaged flag was discovered by a company employee, who then notified the police.
It took law enforcement some time to identify the perpetrator. He turned out to be a local resident born in 2003. He was detained by officers from the South Latgale Police Department.
A criminal case has been opened regarding the incident under Part 1 of Article 78 of the Latvian Criminal Code—actions aimed at inciting national, ethnic, or religious hostility.
Under Latvian law, such actions are punishable by imprisonment for up to three years, community service, or a substantial fine.
The investigation has been completed, and the case is being prepared for trial.
Earlier in Lithuania, a court sentenced a man to three months in prison.
In central Kyiv, law enforcement officers detained a man who was mocking the Alley of Flags on Independence Square.
