Lithuania has reported a dangerous situation in the skies over the Baltic region

Lithuania has reported a dangerous situation in the skies over the Baltic region

Following a series of incidents involving drones, the Baltic states are increasingly voicing concerns about security issues in their airspace. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda stated that the situation no longer appears to be a series of isolated incidents but is becoming a new reality for the region, according to Delfi.

According to the Lithuanian leader, Russia’s war against Ukraine directly affects the security of the Baltic states, and the threats are becoming increasingly diverse—ranging from drones to cyberattacks and attempts to pressure critical infrastructure. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda made a strong statement regarding the security of the Baltic states following new drone incidents near the European Union’s eastern border. He made these remarks during a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, as well as the leaders of Latvia and Estonia.

The main topic of the talks was regional security. The parties discussed airspace protection, strengthening air defense, countering drones, and protecting critical infrastructure.

Nausėda emphasized that recent drone incidents cannot be viewed as coincidental. “Last week, drone incidents were recorded in the airspace of Lithuania and other Baltic countries near the eastern border of the European Union. These are not isolated provocations or random events,” the Lithuanian president stated.

According to him, all of this is a direct consequence of the war Russia is waging against Ukraine. “This is yet another reminder of how close the war is to us,” Nausėda said.

The Lithuanian president also noted that threats to the region have long since ceased to be limited to military risks alone. He cited constant pressure on the Baltic states through electronic jamming, information attacks, and the risk of sabotage. “Today, the skies over the Baltic states are no longer safe enough,” Nausėda emphasized.

According to him, the Baltic region is now living under a “new security reality,” where states must respond not only to traditional military threats but also to hybrid attacks.

During the meeting, they also discussed support for Ukraine and the need to increase sanctions pressure on Russia. The leaders of the Baltic states emphasized that the security of the entire region directly depends on the outcome of the war in Ukraine.

Recently, the Baltic states have been reporting incidents near their borders with increasing frequency. These include both the appearance of drones and disruptions in communication and GPS systems. Against this backdrop, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia continue to demand that NATO and the EU further strengthen the eastern flank.
