In Lithuania, train cars derailed, disrupting train service

A railway accident has occurred in Lithuania. In the Kėdainiai district, at the Gudžunai station, several freight cars carrying gravel derailed. Train service was temporarily disrupted due to the incident.

This was reported by LRT, citing a statement from the railway company Lietuvos geležinkeliai (LTG).

Due to the accident, train service has been disrupted on the Vilnius–Klaipėda–Vilnius, Vilnius–Šiauliai–Vilnius, Kaunas–Šiauliai–Kaunas, and Vilnius–Riga–Valga routes.

Buses are being arranged to transport passengers, and ticket sales have been temporarily suspended.

It is currently estimated that service on the first track may resume around 5:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, the second track has been severely damaged and will require major repairs.

Until the first track reopens, the accident will affect the movement of 18 passenger trains—that is, about 3,000 passengers.

No one was injured in the incident. All LTG teams have been dispatched to the scene, and an investigation will be launched to determine the circumstances of the incident.
