A UN peacekeeper was killed and two others were wounded in a shelling attack in Lebanon
One peacekeeper from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was killed in a mortar attack in southeastern Lebanon. Two other soldiers were wounded; their condition is currently being assessed.
This was reported in a statement by the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission.
“Early this morning, a UNIFIL peacekeeper died from severe injuries sustained during a mortar attack on his position near the town of Marjayoun in southeastern Lebanon,” the statement said.
In addition, two peacekeepers who were also wounded “are receiving treatment at a medical facility at the UNIFIL base.”
It is noted that the shelling occurred late last night and the seriously wounded peacekeeper was “flown to a hospital in Beirut, where he died from his injuries.”
The statement does not mention who exactly carried out the attack on the UN peacekeepers’ positions.
The mission reported this on social media platform X.
Earlier, Israel and Lebanon agreed to a ceasefire.
