169 people were detained in London on the first day of the Notting Hill Carnival
In London, law enforcement officers detained 169 people on the first day of the Notting Hill Carnival, which is considered Europe’s largest street festival.
Reasons for the arrests included suspected drug and weapon possession, assaults—including attacks on emergency responders—and sexual offenses. Most of the arrests took place directly on the festival grounds, while another 27 people were arrested nearby.
The London Police reported that 169 people had been arrested as of Sunday evening. The arrests were related to offenses including drug and weapon possession, physical violence, and sexual assaults.
“Although officers responded to a number of incidents, as expected at an event of this scale, the overall atmosphere was predominantly positive and festive,” the police said.
In 2025, the London Metropolitan Police reported 528 arrests during the two main days of the carnival. In 2024, eight knife attacks occurred during the event, one of which resulted in the death of 32-year-old mother Sher Maximen.

Earlier, police stated that more than 7,000 law enforcement officers would be deployed to West London during the holiday weekend.
It is noted that the Notting Hill Carnival, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, is dedicated to Caribbean culture and features parades, live music, street food, and more.
