Spanish exchange student stabbed to death in Mexico
In the city of Cuautla in the Mexican state of Morelos, 21-year-old Spanish student Claudia Tacoronte Aguilera was stabbed to death at the Casa de la Cultura cultural center. She studied at the University of Granada and had arrived at the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos on an exchange program, Mexico News Daily reports.
Investigation as a possible femicide
The attack occurred during an event dedicated to medicinal plants. The administration of Casa de la Cultura de Cuautla said that the student was the victim of a suspected armed robbery.
Morelos Attorney General Fernando Blumenkron said the case is being investigated as a possible femicide. Law enforcement officers must determine whether the victim's gender was a motive for the crime. As of Monday morning, the attacker had not been identified and no arrests had been made in the case.
According to Blumenkron, Mexican authorities immediately notified the Spanish consulate in Mexico of Tacoronte's death. She was studying early childhood education and began her exchange studies at the UAEM campus in Cuautla last month.

Universities' reaction
The Autonomous University of the State of Morelos expressed condolences to the victim's family and urged the prosecutor's office to conduct an immediate and comprehensive investigation with a gender perspective. The University of Granada also condemned the murder and held a public memorial event for the student on Monday.
The rectorate of the University of Granada announced the cancellation of its exchange program with UAEM. The decision affected three students who were due to study in Morelos next semester. Tacoronte became the fourth UAEM student killed this year; all the other student victims were also women.
According to official statistics, 380 femicides occurred in Mexico during the first seven months of 2026. More than 40% of the cases were recorded in five federal entities: Sinaloa, Morelos, Chiapas, Mexico City and Tamaulipas.
