A 265-meter-long underground tunnel leading to the United States has been discovered in Mexico
During a raid in Mexico, police discovered a 265-meter-long underground tunnel which, according to investigators, leads toward the U.S. state of California. Law enforcement officials are working to determine who may have used the illegal passage.
Ahead of the World Cup in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, police conducted a raid. During searches in the southern part of Tijuana, Mexico, law enforcement found ammunition, cell phones, bank cards, and methamphetamine.
At the same time, they stumbled upon a tunnel leading across the border to the Otay Mesa district in California. This was confirmed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Investigations Division. Agents from San Diego, where the tunnel ended, were working at the scene.
Investigators determined that the tunnel was 265 meters long and about six meters deep. It was also equipped with lighting, ventilation, and an electronic sliding mechanism that allowed for movement in both directions between Mexico and the U.S.
Mexican authorities believe the tunnel was used to transport drugs, explosives, and weapons. Evidence and property were seized and handed over to the California Attorney General’s Office, which will continue the investigation.
