Three kidnapping victims freed and seven detained in Mexico — Mexico News Daily
In the Mexican resort city of Puerto Peñasco, Sonora state, security forces freed three kidnapped people and detained seven suspects, including a minor. A shooting occurred during the operation, in which three agents of the Sonora Investigative Police were injured.
As Mexico News Daily reports, the operation was carried out on Friday with the participation of military personnel, federal agencies and Sonora state investigative authorities. Security Minister Omar García Harfuch said that intelligence helped identify a site linked to a kidnapping case.
Shooting during the operation
When military personnel and police officers approached the site, armed civilians opened fire, law enforcement officials said. Security forces returned fire and ultimately brought the situation under control.
According to the Sonora prosecutor’s office, one agent sustained a lower-limb injury, while two female agents were injured by shrapnel. All three were in stable condition.

Weapons, drugs and vehicles
After the shootout, law enforcement officers obtained a search warrant and seized more than 40 long guns, about 4,000 rounds of ammunition, two Minimi machine guns and a 12.7 mm Browning M2 machine gun.
During further searches at two sites in central Puerto Peñasco, authorities seized heroin, methamphetamine, loaded magazines, bulletproof vests, tactical gear and three expensive vehicles that had previously been reported stolen in the United States.
The detainees may face charges of attempted aggravated murder, crimes against public servants, aggravated vehicle theft, participation in a criminal organization and kidnapping. The investigation began after several miners told police that they had managed to escape an attempted kidnapping, while others had not. Federal services tracked the route and located a white Chevrolet Suburban described by those who escaped.
