Six stores closed in Melbourne over illegal tobacco
In Melbourne, Australia, Tobacco Licensing Victoria inspectors ordered six stores to cease operations for up to 90 days following inspections this week. Three outlets are located in Footscray, while another three are in Richmond.
New powers for inspectors
As ABC News Australia reports, new laws came into force in the state of Victoria this week. They allow police and Tobacco Licensing Victoria inspectors to close stores where the sale of illegal tobacco products has been detected.
The initial closure period may be up to 90 days. In the event of repeated violations, the regulator may seek a longer closure of the outlet through the courts. Tobacco Licensing Victoria Chief Operating Officer Brie Oliver said these closures would be the first of many similar measures in the state.

Monitoring compliance with orders
