Rabbi attacked in Milan, police detain suspect — Jerusalem Post
In Milan, Italy, three young men attacked a 60-year-old rabbi from the local Jewish community while he was waiting for a bus near the Jewish quarter. Police detained a 20-year-old Tunisian man on suspicion of religiously motivated violence, The Jerusalem Post reports.
Details of the attack
According to a statement by Milan’s Jewish community, the attackers identified the rabbi as Jewish by his clothing. They surrounded the man, insulted him, and kicked and punched him.
Community president Volker Meghnagi said the attackers also removed the rabbi’s head covering, threw it to the ground, stepped on it, and spat in the victim’s direction. The rabbi managed to photograph the suspects as they fled and later filed a report at Milan police headquarters.

Investigation and reaction
Two other young men, aged 19 and 22, are also suspected of involvement in the attack. One is of Tunisian origin and the other is of Moroccan origin. Investigators are checking whether direct antisemitic remarks were made during the attack.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with the rabbi and the city’s Jewish community. She called the incident cowardly and unacceptable and said the government would fight antisemitic hatred. The Israeli Embassy in Rome also stated that antisemitism in Italy and Europe is intensifying and is increasingly accompanied by violence.
