Gas prices in Moldova are set to rise sharply—by nearly one and a half times
Moldova plans to significantly raise natural gas rates. The cost of natural gas for consumers is expected to rise by nearly 50%.
The reason cited for this decision is the impact of the war in the Middle East, which has affected the global energy market. The country’s authorities are preparing to revise rates due to rising energy prices.
The state-owned company Energocom announced this week that it is asking the national energy regulator to approve a 45% increase in natural gas rates — from 14.42 Moldovan lei to 20.93 lei per cubic meter (approximately 53 UAH).
The increase is justified by rising exchange prices for gas due to the war in the Middle East. It is noted that the average purchase price factored into the current tariff is 404.24 euros per 1,000 cubic meters, but the actual price over the past six months has risen to approximately €423.28, and for the fall months and December, it is projected to reach as high as €623.54 per 1,000 cubic meters. The accumulated tariff deviations amounted to 106.8 million lei (over 272 million hryvnia).
Acting Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu supported Energocom’s actions.
“If we postpone tariff adjustments, the actual costs don’t just disappear—they turn into tariff deviations,” the official noted.
He noted that against the backdrop of the war between the U.S. and Iran and uncertainty regarding supplies from the Persian Gulf countries, prices are changing practically every day.
