Toro King Oyo Nyimba dies in Uganda at age 34
Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the king of Uganda’s traditional Toro kingdom, has died at the age of 34. Toro Prime Minister Kelvin Armstrong Rwomire Akiiki announced this late on Thursday evening, Deutsche Welle English reports.
Akiiki did not name the cause of the monarch’s death. He said a more detailed official statement, including on the burial and mourning events, would be released later. He called on Toro residents to remain united, calm and pray during this difficult time.
Heir to the throne
The Toro prime minister said succession to the crown is secured: Oyo Nyimba is survived by a crown prince. His identity is to be officially disclosed in accordance with the traditions and customs of the Toro kingdom.
Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine also expressed condolences over the monarch’s death. Reports of the king’s death triggered an outpouring of condolences on social media and received wide coverage in Ugandan media.

The youngest reigning monarch
Oyo Nyimba was born on April 16, 1992. He ascended the Toro throne in 1995 following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, when he was three years old. In 2025, Guinness World Records noted that he was still the world’s youngest reigning monarch.
Toro is located in western Uganda, near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Uganda is a republic, but traditional monarchies formed before the colonial period remain in the country. Their power is mostly symbolic, but they have significant cultural and social influence. Traditional monarchies were banned after independence in 1962, and President Yoweri Museveni restored them in 1993.
Oyo Nyimba studied in the United Kingdom at the University of Winchester. He supported initiatives in youth development, HIV prevention, environmental protection, tourism and combating climate change. Before reports of his death, one Ugandan minister told local media that the king was seriously ill and had sought medical treatment in the United States.
