Moldova has identified the leading candidate for the position of prime minister
Moldova’s ruling party, PAS, has selected its candidate for prime minister. The candidate is businessman and investor Vasile Tofan, who will be officially presented to President Maia Sandu.
Party officials say they are counting on his experience in business and international investments. They cite continuing reforms, fighting corruption, and moving the country toward EU accession as some of the future government’s main priorities.
The ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) will nominate entrepreneur and investor Vasile Tofan as its candidate for the office of Prime Minister of Moldova. This was announced on July 10 by Parliament Speaker and party leader Igor Grosu. According to Grosu, Tofan’s candidacy will be presented to Moldovan President Maia Sandu on Saturday during official consultations.
Before making the decision, the party leadership spent several hours in discussions with the businessman regarding his vision for the country’s development and the government’s future work. “We spent several hours discussing Mr. Tofan’s vision and action plan with him. I am glad that we share common goals and fundamental values—EU accession in the coming years, rooting out corruption in government institutions, implementing the reforms already underway, and economic growth,” said Igor Grosu.
PAS emphasizes that Vasile Tofan has extensive experience in business, management, and investment. He has worked not only in Moldova but also abroad. Tofan is a co-founder of the “Europe-2028” civic movement and an investor in Horizon Capital, a fund that carries out investment projects in Ukraine and Moldova. He has also managed investments in a number of large companies, including Purcari, Glass Container Company, and maib.
In addition, Vasile Tofan serves on the boards of directors of AmCham Moldova, Startup Moldova, and the media company Media Alternativa, which operates the TV8 and 1TV channels. Before returning to Moldova, he worked at the multinational company Philips in Amsterdam, where he focused on corporate development.
The prospective candidate for prime minister studied at Harvard Business School and Erasmus University Rotterdam. He is fluent in five foreign languages—English, French, Dutch, Ukrainian, and Russian. If Vasile Tofan’s candidacy is endorsed, he could lead the Moldovan government and be responsible for implementing key reforms that the ruling party considers necessary for the country’s further European integration.
