Nigeria warns of potential security threats

Nigeria’s Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) issued a warning urging the public to remain vigilant and take appropriate precautionary measures due to potential security threats in certain parts of the country.

Reasons for the warning

As Premium Times Nigeria reports, ONSA’s advisory is dated August 27. The agency said the warning is based on ongoing security operations, intelligence gathering and threat monitoring in cooperation with local and international partners.

ONSA noted that Nigerian security agencies are conducting operations in the country’s northeast, northwest and north-central region. According to the agency, several commanders of terrorist and bandit groups were neutralized during these operations, while their camps, hideouts and other strongholds were destroyed.

The warning mentions the deaths of fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), including its commander Abubakar al-Mainuk, also known as Abu Bilal al-Minuki. According to the publication, he and his subordinates were killed in March during a joint Nigerian and US operation on an island in Borno State in northeastern Nigeria.

Recommendations for the public

ONSA said that groups that suffered losses may attempt isolated actions in order to spread fear or draw attention to themselves. The agency urged citizens to remain vigilant at all times, ensure security in their surroundings and report suspicious people, objects, vehicles or movements to the relevant authorities.

State and local government authorities were advised to strengthen vigilance in communities, maintain preventive measures and promptly share information with security agencies. Citizens were also urged to remain calm, refrain from spreading unverified information and cooperate with security authorities.

ONSA assured that the Nigerian government would continue cooperating with international partners on intelligence sharing, security cooperation and coordination of preventive measures.
