Murree steps up checks on school vans after fire — Dawn

In Murree, Pakistan, the city traffic police have set up special teams to inspect the fire safety of public transport and school vans after a fire in one such vehicle. Dawn reports.

Fire extinguisher checks

Special traffic patrol teams were formed on the orders of Murree District Police Officer Raza Tanveer Sipra and City Traffic Police Chief Munir Ahmed Hashmi. They have stepped up inspections on roads and at other locations across the district.

Patrol officers will check whether school vans have fire extinguishers and whether they are fit for use. During inspections of public and school transport, they will also monitor the technical condition of fire extinguishers and their expiry dates.

Requirements for carriers

Munir Ahmed Hashmi instructed patrol officers not to compromise on the safety of vehicles used to transport schoolchildren and other passengers. Drivers, vehicle owners and carriers were urged to equip them with proper, working fire extinguishers.

The traffic police noted that the first moments after a vehicle catches fire due to a short circuit, a fuel leak or other causes are crucial. A working fire extinguisher can help put out the fire at an early stage and reduce potential losses before Rescue 1122 and other emergency services arrive.

Police also asked school administrations, parents, carriers and drivers to pay attention to the safety equipment of vehicles transporting children. Inspections of public and school transport will continue in different parts of the district.
