In the Netherlands, firefighters continue to battle a large-scale wildfire that has engulfed about 100 hectares of a nature reserve in the southeastern part of the country.
The fire broke out on Monday, August 3, in a nature reserve near the village of Oostrum in the province of Limburg, close to the border with Germany. As of Tuesday morning, the fire had not yet been contained.
According to a representative of the regional emergency services, the spread of the fire is being complicated by winds that are constantly changing direction.
About 300 firefighters were deployed overnight to battle the blaze. Firefighting helicopters were also scheduled to join the operation on Tuesday morning.
Due to the threat of the fire spreading, authorities evacuated a nearby campground. Train service was also temporarily suspended on the section of track running near the fire’s epicenter.
Local authorities noted that due to the prolonged drought, fires in nature reserves can spread very quickly.
As Euronews reports, European countries have recently been suffering from severe drought, accompanied by low river levels, water use restrictions, and large-scale wildfires following a wave of extreme heat.
