The sea washed hundreds of thousands of euros in cash onto a beach in Sicily

On one of Sicily’s beaches, vacationers witnessed an unusual discovery—they spotted wads of cash in the water. In total, the sea washed ashore about 670,000 euros, which people began collecting right from the shore.

It turned out that a boat from Malta had capsized near the beach that day. Rescuers initially evacuated a man and an eight-year-old boy, but later discovered two more men on board—for unknown reasons, they had been hiding below deck, after which they threw a bag of money into the water.

After that, the men tried to swim to shore. One of them was detained; the other is still being sought.

Some of the money washed ashore, and people began collecting it. The total amount was approximately 670,000 euros. Law enforcement officials quickly intervened and recovered nearly the entire sum.

The two suspects—Maltese citizens—are facing charges for illegal activities involving the money. The origin of the cash remains unknown; theories include drug trafficking, money laundering, or counterfeiting.

The boy was handed over to social services, and the juvenile prosecutor’s office is handling the case. He does not speak Italian, so he likely came from abroad. It also appears that the boy is not related to the detained men. His parents are currently being sought.

The Center for Public Health has updated the list of beaches in Ukraine that are safe for swimming.

Experts also advise against swimming in bodies of water that do not have official beach status, as the water there is not regularly tested. This was reported by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

Oleg Kipper, head of the Odesa Regional State Administration, announced the expansion of the list of safe locations for recreation, bringing the total number of accessible beach areas in the region to 27.
