Twenty-five U.S. states have filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump’s administration, challenging the imposition of new import tariffs. The plaintiffs argue that these restrictions effectively replaced the tariffs that the Supreme Court struck down in February.
Last month, the U.S. imposed double-digit tariffs on imports from 59 countries and the European Union, citing its partners’ insufficient efforts to combat the import of products made using forced labor.
The new tariffs took effect after the expiration of the temporary tariffs that the Trump administration had imposed following the Supreme Court’s ruling.
“After losing in the Supreme Court, the Trump administration is once again attempting to illegally raise taxes on families and businesses through a new round of tariffs,” said New York State Attorney General Letitia James.
The lawsuit, initiated by New York and Oregon, was joined by 23 other states, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington, and others.
In the lawsuit, the coalition of states argues that there is “no rational connection” between the problem of forced labor in international supply chains and the imposition of blanket global tariffs.

As a reminder, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing new tariffs on a range of goods from Canada, including hockey equipment. The restrictions apply, in particular, to hockey sticks and other products related to one of Canada’s most popular sports. The new rules mark another step in the trade dispute between Washington and Ottawa.
